SUPERHELLARAD

Shorterm presents: Superhellarad!!! Aka Hannah!!

Hannah, also known as superhellarad, is a San Marcos local who has been dominating the local show scene. She is responsible for planning and coordinating some of the local shows here, she is all about bringing the Austin music/DIY show scene to San Marcos.

Hannah has been going to concerts regularly since she was 14, and has always had a love for live music. She has been traveling to different venues all over Texas since then, such as Austin and Dallas, so she can get her moshing fix.

At age 18 is when she first became enamored with the Austin DIY scene. “My first show after the pandemic was Amygdala at 21st Street Co-op, and I quickly made friends in the line to get in. I met people from San Antonio's Mother Patterns (that band has shifted into Fawn) and we talked about screamo (William Bonney, I Hate Sex, the classics)! I loved the show so much. The singer/screamer of Amygdala, Bianca, walked me to my car after the show to make sure I got home safe. I just felt such an immense sense of belonging.” says Hannah.

Hannah is originally from Killeen, so she had been looking forward to moving somewhere where house shows and DIY were a thing of beauty. Her first encounter with San Marcos was attending a House show here at a place called Peach house, on Burleson street. She says “The floorboards were bouncing because everyone was jumping, we were packed shoulder-to-shoulder like sardines, and liquid lights were going crazy on an overhead projector.” However, when Hannah came to San Marcos to attend Grad school in Fall 2021 after the pandemic, the music and house show scene had become almost non-existent.

Hannah started traveling to Austin to attend the co-op shows there, which she still enjoys doing, but she longed for a consistent scene in San Marcos. “I met lots of people traveling from San Marcos at other shows, and quickly realized other people were dying for it like I was.” says Hannah. She decided to take matters into her own hands by organizing a birthday show for herself!

When it comes to a venue, “San Marcos doesn't have much outside of a couple bars when it comes to venues open to the public, but I knew that Studio San Martian had been running events at this park off the Square called Private Park. It was large and open enough for what I wanted to do, and the owner (Laura) was the sweetest, most community-minded person I could have hoped for.” Hannah stated.

She paid for everything out of pocket (the venue, the sound system, the bands, the DJs, the smores materials, the tarp and oil for the wrestling, etc.), and she didn't even charge a cover because she wanted to make sure it was worth everyone's time. The show was absolutely killer!

“I loved that show so much. The lineup was PERFECT. We had shoegaze (fawn), experimental (omni entia), noise (blank hellscape), AND screamo (sinema, fka sw!tch from Denton).” says Hannah, “People from all over Central Texas came to sing me happy birthday and mosh with me, and I felt so special :). After that, Cristina Mauri (@moonbby6) reached out to me to throw Bloodbath. After that turnout, the rest was history (in my opinion).”

Hannah's friends in the scene here have also played a huge role in her success by being so supportive and appreciative. Brendan Morrow and Hannah have helped each other out by giving recommendations on how to make things run smoothly and what venue to use. Hannah's boyfriend, Cable (Caleb Peters), helped her set up the string lights at private park and they ended up leaving them up permanently as a gift to Laura, the owner, and for anyone else who throws a show after dark at Private Park.

Hannah now has her own sound system so she won't have to rent one anymore, she also rents it out at a discounted rate to anyone who may need it. Cable, her boyfriend, has been running the sound for all her shows (power couple business model af). Hannah even plans to do a tutorial on how to throw a show at Private Park, and is planning on working with non traditional venues to throw more intimate shows, “I've already done a show with Vulgar Records (touring El Paso band Hexenzense, and San Antonio bands Killing Seasons, Foster Pettit, and Loudermilk) at Alchemy Records!” she says.

The last show Hannah did was a collaboration with two other awesome people in the local show scene, Brendan Morrow and Hannah Fulkerson, together they put on Troubled Acres: the camp that makes you emo. “We used my sound system, and it's gotten to the point where I'm so comfortable with the stress of running a show that it felt like second nature,” says Hannah. “I was finally able to leisurely enjoy the show and really be present. All the bands (ladyluck, rose ceremony, jockey, die mart) were amazing, and there were so many surprises (a closing set from won't stop dreaming out of Dallas, fire spinning, my best friend flying down from DC to see me at my show???). Everybody dressed up exactly how we wanted, and I saw so many familiar faces from people who live HERE in San Marcos.” Not only was the show a lot of fun, but it also was for a good cause. Hannah, Brendan, and Hannah F were able to donate two pallet carts worth of cans to the Southside Community Center, and Jockey from Denton who performed at the show had them donate their cut of the cover to the community center as well! (check out shorterms video to see what an emotastic event that was)

Hannah hopes to throw as many shows as possible before she inevitably moves away in a year or two. She wants people to know that they are capable of throwing a show because DIY is for everyone, “I want the scene to be diverse and alive here in San Marcos.”

Hannah is an inspiration to anyone wanting to throw a show here in San Marcos, go check out her instagram @superhellarad, p.s. She also makes killer flyers for shows too.
